Shelfies

In old days books were written by men of letters and read by the public. Nowadays books are written by the public and read by nobody.

So “selfie” might have been named by Oxford Dictionaries as the word of 2013, but what about the humble “shelfie”? Coined here in Divonne-les-Bains, France, by my very own M (you read it here first), the shelfie is a self-published photo book which you’ll find… Yep, you got it. And it just so happens that I’ve made three of them so far.

The first book, Holy, Holy, Holy, is a visual aidemémoire of the two years that M and I spent in Israel and the Occupied Territories. And when I say visual I mean visual… It was the first book that I made and it didn’t occur to me that it might be helpful to have some words on the page to remind us of where the places depicted actually were. The good news is that the subsequent books have been better. I’m sure I’ll have nailed it by the time I get to about number 50 in the series.

The second book, Very Cool Holidays – Crossing Off the Continents, is proof, if any were needed, that M is a man of his word. When we first got together he promised that we’d have “very cool holidays”. The photo book of the vacations we took in our first three years together proves that he meant it.

I made the third book, imaginatively entitled Herman’s European Holiday, to remind my Dad of all the fun stuff he did when he visited two of his kids in Europe in 2013. He enjoyed the book (or maybe just the holiday) so much that he came back again six months later.
